Cute Nordic Christmas sirop cookies with sweet & warming spices

These cookies are so christmassy and with a wonderful taste (and fragrance) of typical sweet & warm Christmas spices like cinnamon, cloves, all spice, cardamom and ginger. Uhm! I´m sure you can almost smell it already?

This recipe goes back to my childhood, where I made decorated hearts with my mother. I want to share the recipe with you (see below). It´s a lovely thing to bake with children, friends or family. You could make it a get together baking day!

Enjoy, and have some lovely, relaxing Christmas holidays!

The portion gives 3-4 baking sheets full.

150 grams butter, room temperature

150 grams light cane sugar

3/4 deciliter maple sirop, or ordinary sirop

1 tablespoon powdered cinnamon

2 teaspoons cloves

1 teaspoon dried ginger

1 teaspoon cardamom

1/2 teaspoon all spice

1 small or medium egg

3/4 deciliter milk

about 400-500 grams wheat flour

1/2 tablespoon baking soda

Frosting: Egg whites (pasteurized) and powdered sugar

How to do:

Start the day before baking.

Use powdered spices or grind them yourself in a mortar (lovely fragrances will fill your kitchen and your nostrils).

Mix sugar and sirop with the soft butter. Add the spices, the lightly whipped egg and milk. Mix a small amount of flour with the baking soda and stir into the mixture. Add flour little by little until the dough has a flexible consistency. Not sticky and not too dry. Wrap the dough in parchment paper, put it in a plastic bag or a dishtowel and store in the fridge till the following day.

Day 2:

Remove the dough from the fridge some time before baking, to soften it. Then divide the dough in smaller portions (like 4) and knead to soften it and make it ready to work. Roll out the dough on a flour powdered table, to 1/2 cm thick. Cut out figures with cake tins/pastry cutters. Put the cookie figures on a baking sheet. Bake them in the oven at 200 degrees (celsius) for about 10-12 minutes.

When the cookies have cooled off you can decorate them with frosting.

Frosting:

Mix powdered sugar and lightly whipped (pasteurized) egg whites (don´t make it too thin). Pour into a cornet or small plastic bag (cut a VERY small hole) and decorate the cookies according to your taste.

Have fun - and a MERRY CHRISTMAS
